Ancient Concepts To Modern Interpretation

While AI as a concept has roots in ancient myths and dreams of intelligent machines, its modern interpretation began to take shape in the 1940s and 1950s. During this period, the foundations of AI research were laid with the creation of the first programmable digital computer during World War II and the publication of Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts' work describing artificial neurons.

The Dartmouth Conference, Or The "Birth of AI"

The field of AI was formally born at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, where John McCarthy coined the term "Artificial Intelligence." Following the conference, researchers embarked on ambitious projects, fueled by optimism and generous funding.

The Logic Theorist And ELIZA: Early AI Programs

The Logic Theorist, created by Allen Newell, J.C. Shaw, and Herbert Simon, is often considered the first AI program. It was designed to mimic human problem-solving skills. Another significant AI program developed during the 1960s was ELIZA, a computer program capable of interacting with humans in English, developed by Joseph Weizenbaum.

AI Winters—Setbacks And Funding Cuts

The late 1960s to 1970s and late 1980s to 1990s saw periods known as "AI winters", characterized by cuts in funding and a decline in interest in AI research due to its failure to meet heightened expectations.

Expert Systems And Machine Learning

The 1980s saw the rise of expert systems, AI programs that use knowledge and analytical skills to provide specialist advice. However, the real revolution came in the form of Machine Learning. The ability for machines to learn from data and improve over time opened up numerous possibilities for AI.

The Advent Of Deep Learning

The development and evolution of deep learning in the 2000s changed the AI landscape. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, uses neural networks with many layers (hence "deep") to model and understand complex patterns.
